Exploratory Laboratory for Advanced Networking and Systems

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Michigan State University

Faculty and students within the experimental Laboratory for Advanced Networking and Systems (eLANS) investigate a variety of research issues in networks and computing systems. Example research problems involve mobile systems, wireless networks, and high performance networks and computing systems.

Researchers are discovering methods for improving use and applications of peer-to-peer networks, managing the resources of computing clusters, as well as the bandwidth to serve supermedia systems. Security and privacy are important problem areas, including their relevance to service discovery systems as well as implementation in intrusions detection systems.

Support for eLANS research has come from several government agencies and companies, including the NSF, DARPA, NIH, Air Force, NSA, IBM, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard.

Our Research Focus

Wireless Systems and Networks

Researchers at eLANS focus on designing wireless systems and networks across different transmission media. Our past work has focused on sensor networks, mobile systems, optical communication, and millimeter wave communication.

We focus on both theory and practical deployment. Our work is published in peer-reviewed conferences and journal publications. Some examples of conferences we try to publish in include IEEE INFOCOM, ACM MobiCom, ACM MobiSys, ACM SenSys, NSDI etc.

We also strive to publish our work in journal publications such as IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications etc.

What We Do

Systems Design and Implementation

We identify new ways to advance the state-of-the-art, and demonstrate our findings. We have focused on future wireless systems design, improving existing networks and systems, and combining different wireless modalities.

The applications of our work include Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), mobile networks and systems, Reflective Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), and custom mobile system accesories.

Our Approach

From idea to publication

Researchers at eLANS are encouraged to find new avenues for research, with flexibility of exploration being a high priority. We value the intersection of personal research skills with novel research ideas and directions.

Once an idea is discovered, we make sure to conduct an extensive literature review to confirm its novelty. We verify our findings with software and/or hardware simulations, and present our results to competitive peer-reviewed conferences and journals.
